Six Lessons from Star Wars that All Real Estate Agents can Learn From
It’s May 4th!
Not to sound too geeky, but may the force be with you!
For over 40 years, this iconic film series has been shaping values across all walks of life. From a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars films give us a lesson about failure, success, redemption, and never losing hope in oneself.
With this, we are sharing five valuable lessons that real estate agents should keep in their hearts and minds.
1. “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” -- Yoda
In the Jedi training sequence in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, Master Yoda delivers this immortal piece of advice. This advice serves as a direct rebuttal to the mentality of “trying” to accomplish a difficult task, rather than actually getting it done.
As real estate agents, we might be overwhelmed with the tasks that come with the job. We might refuse to commit ourselves to do things when they get daunting. But we must overcome these doubts and hesitations. Face the challenge and give it your best.
2. “Your focus determines your reality.” -- Qui-Gon Jinn
This advice from the Jedi master to his apprentice encouraged Obi-Wann to have a focus on his surroundings and less on his emotional state.
To be committed to accomplishing our business goals, our priority should be our clients and their satisfaction. Learning how to detach our personal lives from our business affairs will give a clear state of mind that is focused on achieving success.
3. “In my experience there is no such thing as luck.” -- Obi-Wan Kenobi
Using his lightsaber for the first time, Luke Skywalker deflects some of a remote training droid's laser. Obi-Wan Kenobi reminds him to focus, and he grows less awkward. Han Solo scoffs, but Obi-Wan sharply disagrees.
Don’t undervalue your accomplishments to luck. Acknowledge the hard work you put into your endeavors. Also, listen to your mentors and colleagues who encourage you. In a competitive real estate industry, it takes hard work and empowering mentor system to be accomplished.
4. "There's always a bigger fish." -- Qui-Gon Jinn
In the film The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn makes this observation after a giant fish almost devours their underwater ship but is saved when another even larger creature intervenes.
No matter what you achieve in life, there is always somebody bigger and more powerful around the corner. Take that as a motivation to keep learning. Get inspiration from your successful colleagues, and even your competitors. You must also believe that you can be successful like them.
5. “Pass on what you have learned.” -- Yoda
Yoda said, as he transmitted his knowledge to Luke in a final lesson, for him to go forth and impart that knowledge to others.
Real estate agents should never lose sight of the importance of giving. They should not turn toward selfishness. Sharing with others, not just focusing on yourself, is the key to creating something greater than yourself.
At Lapp Realty, we make sure that we pass on what we’ve learned. We mentor and train real estate agents no matter which stage they are in their careers.
6. Fear is the path to the dark side.” -- Yoda
Yoda senses Anakin's fear of loss, which the Jedi believes will be a problem for the future that lies ahead.
Let fear guide your business decisions and it will only hold you back and limit what you’re capable of. Have a strategy that is firmly grounded in optimism and hope, and use it to navigate to the end zone consistently.
And may the Force be with you. Always.
